Why this hurts conversion
- The shopper arrives on a specific PDP with purchase intent.
- The exact size they need is unavailable.
- The PDP becomes a dead end instead of a sales page.
- Paid traffic and merchandising effort both underperform.
For apparel brands, a missing size often kills the session even when demand is strong. The right response is not always “buy more stock.” Sometimes the issue is inventory distribution, not total inventory volume.
The issue is often not total stock. It is uneven stock across sizes. If the category supports controlled mapping, virtual availability can recover demand before it disappears.
Do not attempt this everywhere. Start where operations can actually support it.
Use real garment logic and fit reality, not assumptions.
The recovery model must stop before it threatens real source inventory.
